What Is Solid Board?
- Most of the packaging used in Australia is corrugated paperboard. Corrugated paperboard works perfectly under dry, stable conditions.
- Solid paperboard (solid board) is not corrugated. Instead, solid board is produced by laminating layers of paperboard together, until a certain thickness is achieved.
- Under certain conditions, solid board has advantages over corrugated board. The most obvious example is that corrugated paperboard has limited resistance to the ingression of water, moisture, or even high humidity. Water easily penetrates between the low-density corrugated layers and creates structural weakness. In turn, this leads to collapsing cartons and ruined produce.
- In order to get around the inferior performance of corrugated paperboard in wet or humid conditions, corrugated manufacturers often produce boxes with a heavy wax coating. Although a wax coating acts as a barrier against moisture, wax is undesirable and considered a contaminant. Wax coated paperboard can’t be recycled via industry standard paper recycling equipment.
- Due to its high density, solid board is far more resistant to the ingression of moisture. In addition, we can laminate a lightweight layer of PET to the solid board. The lightweight layer of PET can be separated from the paper fibres via industry standard paper recycling equipment.
When Should I Consider Using Solid Board?
Although rarely seen in Australia, solid board boxes are used globally. Any fruit or vegetable which is hydro cooled or where the packaging is subject to high levels of moisture or humidity, is a good candidate for solid board packaging. For example, broccoli, leaf vegetables, cauliflower, various herbs, mango and more.
